Researching and Visiting Colleges During Covid

In the good ‘ole days, we could hop in the car or on a plane and visit campuses in-person. Although some campuses are gradually opening up to limited in-person visits, for those on a tight budget or who live far away, virtual tours are de rigeur.  The good news is that colleges and music schools have really upped their virtual game to connect with students.  Put on your researcher hat and explore each school to find your best fit!

 More Tips:

  • Look up details on the college website, such as a specific school or college you are interested in (e.g. School of Engineering), performing music faculty (if applicable), facilities, clubs and organizations, athletics, etc.

  • Ask if you could sit in on a virtual class in your area of interest.

  • For music students - ask if you can connect directly with a faculty member to meet and possibly schedule a lesson and/or attend a studio class.

  • Search for “A Day in the Life at [name of college] College” on YouTube.

  • Check out the blog on Unigo with student reviews – it’s kind of like Yelp for colleges!

  • Connect with a recent graduate in your area, perhaps through an alumni association.

  • Follow the school(s) on social media (Facebook, Instagram).

  • What are alumni doing now?  Ask the college about job and graduate school placements.

  • If you are able to drive to the college, consider a drive-through.

  • Find out more about the neighborhood and community.

  • Learn about campus safety.

  • Read about the school through campus media.

  • Find out more about financial aid information.

 Happy travels!!
